Complete Divine
House Rules

Awaken, Mass

Rule: You can’t cast mass awaken on creatures wildshaped or polymorphed or shapechanged into an animal (or tree).

Change: Merely fixing an exploit long known since the beginning of 3.5.

Beast Claws

Rule: Remove from the cleric spell list.

Change: Why would clerics get this spell? No reason.

Bestow Curse, Greater

Rule: Reassign as necromancy.

Change: Now it’s consistent with the PH spell bestow curse.

Blessed Aim

Rule: Change the duration to 1 round per level.

Change: A duration of concentration for a mere +2 bonus is useless. How many archers are in the party anyway?

Brambles

Rule: Deals +1 damage per 3 caster levels (max +5). This spell is not on the clerical spell list.

Change: This spell is otherwise overpowered almost beyond recognition.

Briar Web

Rule: Remove from the cleric spell list. Also note the general change in entanglement effects from the DMG house rule section.

Change: Why would clerics get this spell and not entangle? No reason.

Brilliant Aura

Rule: No damage bonus and it is dismissible.

Change: This is equivalent to a mass greater magic weapon without the damage bonus. It doesn’t need that, too, for crying out loud. However, making it be dismissible does make it more useful, especially if undead or constructs show up later on.

Chain of Eyes

Rule: Allow the spell to be dismissible.

Change: Not being dismissible makes this spell almost useless for being too difficult.

Dance of the Unicorn

Rule: Remove from the cleric spell list.

Change: Why would clerics get this spell? Still no reason.

Divine Metamagic

Rule: You cannot metamagic any spell with a metamagic feat that if the level modifier were applied, would be at a slot higher than you can cast (not based on your ability score modifier, though). For example, a 5th-level cleric could not divine empower spell a spiritual weapon because that would be equivalent to a 4th-level spell. You can only use turn/rebuke undead attempts for divine metamagic, you cannot use turn/rebuke attempts for other creatures.

Change: This is a similar change to the Incantatrix and eliminates the remainder of the unbalanced divine metamagic (remember the errata required the base feat as well).

Energy Vortex

Rule: Does not deal double damage.

Change: That’s a little much, don’t you think?

Miasma

Rule: Add a fortitude save for partial damage. If the save succeeds, then the victim takes 3d6 damage +1 per caster level (max 3d6+15), but is no longer affected by the miasma.

Change: No save is pretty much an automatic kill spell for anyone without spell resistance or a really good dispel magic check. But, adding a save and no partial effect makes it far worse than spells like slay living.

Quill Blast

Rule: How to fix?

Righteous Wrath of the Faithful

Rule: Gives temporary hit points equal to 1d8+caster level (max +10).

Change: Now it’s consistent with the PH spell aid.

Spell Resistance, Mass

Rule: The duration is not divided amongst the recipients.

Change: Dividing the duration just creates a pain in the ass with very little change in the power level of the spell. As it is, this spell will likely be more trouble than its worth for PCs because the PCs are more likely to cast helpful spells on each other. Remember that cure critical wounds you want to cast on your buddy? Make a caster level check!

Spikes

Rule: Deals +1 damage per 3 caster levels (max +5) and lasts for 10 minutes per caster level. This spell is not on the clerical spell list.

Change: Crazy broken otherwise.

Wave of Grief

Rule: Inflicts only a -2 penalty.

Change: At the previous penalty, it’s too strong.
